How to Find an Inmate in Cameron County Jail

Finding an inmate in Cameron County is generally straightforward, as the Sheriff’s Office provides an online search tool, the Cameron County Inmate List, that individuals can use to locate an inmate. The inmate list contains information on individuals currently incarcerated in the county jail who are awaiting trial or bail (for the past 7 days), or who are state or local prisoners. The list does not contain information on federal prisoners who may be present in the jail. The roster is updated every two hours.

Additionally, individuals may also call either jail facility or visit the facility in person to make an inquiry. If choosing to inquire about an inmate in person, individuals should bring their government-issued ID card, as it may be required, and should expect to be screened by security, which may consume the requester’s time.

How to Use the Cameron County Jail Roster

To use the Cameron County Jail Roster, individuals must first locate and access it online. The roster is provided on the Cameron County Sheriff’s website. On the website, individuals will see the "County Sheriff Home," "Divisions," "Information," and "Contact Us" tabs, as well as a search icon. Users can click the "Information" tab to reveal a drop-down menu with links to several other pages. Clicking on the "Inmates" link will direct users to the Inmate List portal, where individuals can access the county’s jail roster. The roster can be searched by the inmate’s name, booking date, Sheriff’s Office ID number, and charge.

What Information is Included in the Cameron County Inmate Roster

The following information is typically available on the Cameron County Inmate List.

  • The inmate’s Sheriff’s Office number and the charges filed against them

Jail Facility Overview in Cameron County

The Cameron County Jail Division consists of four facilities:

  • The Cameron County Jail, also referred to as the old jail
  • The Carizzales-Rucker Detention Center
  • The Cameron County Detention Center 1

These jails primarily hold adult male and female detainees awaiting trial, recently arrested, or sentenced to a short incarceration term. All four facilities have different security levels, with the Carrizales-Rucker Facility serving as the central booking and inmate hub for the jail system.

Juvenile offenders in the county are not held in any of these facilities. Instead, they are held at the Darell B. Hester Juvenile Detention Center. The center is the primary detention facility for juveniles aged 10-17 who were arrested or failed to follow the terms of their probation. The Juvenile Detention Center is operated independently of the main adult jail and is under the authority of the Cameron County Juvenile Justice Department, not the Sheriff’s Office.

In Cameron County, there are also several municipal jails, including those in Brownsville, Harlingen, and San Benito. These jails are not managed by the Cameron County Sheriff, but by the respective police departments: the Brownsville Police Department, the Harlingen Police Department, and the San Benito Police Department. These jails function as short-term holding facilities, housing individuals for brief periods before they are released or transferred to county-run facilities.

How to Send Money to an Inmate in Cameron County Jail

Inmates generally have no way of making money while in the Cameron County Jail, so they are allowed to receive money from family and friends outside the jail to make necessary purchases. When an individual is incarcerated in jail, a commissary account is opened for them, and all money in their possession at the time of booking is deposited in the account.

Individuals outside jail can deposit money into an inmate’s commissary account in person at the kiosk in the Carrizales-Rucker Detention Center lobby. The kiosk typically accepts cash, debit, and credit cards. Individuals can also send money orders or certified checks by mail. Money orders/certified checks should be made payable to the inmate and sent in the format below.

Inmate Search by Jail Facility

An inmate search in Cameron County generally depends on which agency oversees the jail where the inmate is housed. For facilities under the Cameron County Sheriff’s Office (the Carizzales-Rucker Detention Center, the Cameron County Detention Center 1, and the Cameron County Detention Center 2), individuals can search the Cameron County Inmate List. Researchers should note that federal prisoners housed in the county jail facilities are not visible on the list. Also, individuals can obtain inmate information in person at the facility or by calling the facility.

For the Darell B.Hester Juvenile Detention Center, which is under the purview of the Cameron County Justice Department, individuals may obtain inmate information by calling the department at (956) 399-3075 or visiting the jail. However, because juvenile records are not public in the county, information will only be disclosed to family members and legal representatives.

Information on an inmate housed in a city jail, such as the Brownwell Jail, can be obtained by contacting the police department that oversees the jail.

Cameron County Visitation Rules and Schedules

Family or friends who want to visit a loved one in jail will have to follow a strict by-the-book process. This is because, while visitation is allowed, the jail must ensure it is conducted in a manner that does not compromise security or interfere with its daily operations.

Who Can Visit?

Anyone can visit an inmate at the Cameron County Jail, provided they are on the inmate’s visitor list. The visitor list for up to five adults is completed by the inmate at the time of their booking into the facility. An individual can contact an inmate to have their name added to the list if they were denied visiting privileges because they were not included. Changes to a list can only be made at the month’s end; mid-month swaps are not allowed.

How to Visit

Individuals on an inmate’s visitors list who want to visit must first confirm the visitation schedule by calling or visiting the jail. The visitation schedule is set by the Sheriff and can be changed at any time; hence, verification prior to visiting the facility is necessary. After confirmation, individuals may call the jail to schedule their visit and receive approval before going in person to speak to an inmate.

Visitation Time

Inmates are allowed a minimum of two 20-minute visits per week, including at least one evening or weekend visit. Pretrial detainees can sometimes get extra visits to arrange bonds or discuss family/employment matters. Guardians receive additional visits beyond regular hours, but must present legal guardianship documents under Texas Estate Code §§ 1002.012 or 1106.001-1106.003. Emergency visits are possible, but approval is at the discretion of the Jail Administrator.

Visitation Rules

  • Visitors aged 18 years or older must present a valid photo ID, and visitors under 18 must remain under the control of an adult.
  • Visitors must be appropriately dressed and not wear any revealing clothing.
  • Visitors are not allowed to pass or receive anything from the inmate during visits.
  • Visitors must not bring any contraband into the facility.

Video visits are also available through a third-party vendor. Visits cost 30 cents per minute.

The Cameron County Jail system allows individuals to send mail to inmates, though the process is regulated to prevent contraband. As such, each mail sent to a jail facility is inspected to ensure compliance.
